Abernethy – Playground
     Email Post   Print Page

What’s to Love: This is the playground of Abernethy school, which is located in the heart of Ladd’s Addition. This is a very nice, family friendly place in Portland. Although the houses are out of range for most people, the neighborhood has a good, down-to-earth vibe. There are two very nice play structures – one for toddlers and a second for older kids. Both offer some excellent options to improve motor skills, sharpen footwork, and build strong bodies. They are very clean, safe (relatively speaking) and well kept.

Perhaps the nicest feature at Abernethy is the wide-open, cement area of the property. This is the perfect area for riding trikes, bikes. There is also plenty of room for hitting a baseball, playing basketball, or throwing a frisbee.

Caveats: If you’re looking for a bit more socialization, this is usually a pretty quiet playground. You may want to head over to Sellwood or Laurelhurst.

Distance from Portland: Within 2 miles of downtown Portland

Recommended Ages: Young walkers and kids up to 12 and beyond.

Parental Stress Factor: Low to Medium – This is a pretty low key area with parents who really like to interact with their kids. We’ve met some very nice folks at these play structures. I’ve also seen a couple kids get hurt, but accidents happen. I like to let kids play, but I think it’s important to give them a spot as well.

Physical Difficulty: Easy for the parents – unless of course, you decide to follow your kid around like you’re young again! Physically, play structures add so much to the physical development of children.

Family Fun Factor: High! If you haven’t check-out the play structures, it’s time to make your way over to Abernethy. My son loves riding his bike in such a wide-open area.

Pet Friendly: Sure…people bring their dogs here. There is a nice grassy area behind the school.

Weather Considerations: People stay away from play structures in the rain. That is really too bad! When slides are wet, they can be so much fun. You’ll need to pack up the rain gear, and keep a close watch at the bottom of the slides. They will come down like lightning!

Insider Info: We like this playground because it’s so close to New Seasons (Division store). You can grab some sandwiches and head over for a picnic. There is also a beautiful rose garden in the center of Ladd’s Addition with coffee shops nearby.

Family Tips: Don’t forget to check-out their organic garden! Much of what’s grown goes right onto the kids’ plates for lunch. Please respect the garden – the school staff and kids obviously work very hard maintaining it. It’s fun to walk around this garden and try to guess all the different vegetables being grown. The tile work is nice and there are plenty of walls and benches to climb. Watch for some interesting pieces of sculpture too!
