Bob’s Red MillWhat’s to Love:  Is Bob’s Red Mill a Portland Family Adventure?  Sure!  You know Bob’s Red Mill – they process the most gluten-free grains you’ll find this side of the Mississippi, if not the entire country.  Where else could you possibly find Amaranth, Date, Tapioca, Quinoa, Teff, Brown Rice, Millet and Kamut flour?  Many of these products are certified organic and kosher.  This little shop offers a couple other pleasant surprises, if you’re out that way.

Paddle wheel outside Bob’s Red MillI won’t get into too much history here, but Bob Moore started milling grain in the Portland area around 1978.  He had a fascination with old fashioned milling using large grinding stones – a method that was used in the 1800’s.  To this day, Bob’s Red Mill still uses the same “old school” methods for making flour, which translates into quality breads, pastas and baked goods.

We would often pass by Bob’s while traveling on 224.  Now that we’ve been there, we won’t be passing it by that much in the future.  One of the best reasons to stop is some quality breakfasts and sandwiches.  In this area of Portland, a “quality” lunch is a bit hard to come by, so it’s definitely worth a stop.

It’s hard to find so many alternative-grain products in bulk and large bags.  The store has it all!  Plus, to get more of an adventure out of Bob’s, I recommend taking a tour of the factory, which is about 1/2 mile from the retail store.  Because they use grinding stones, your kids will enjoy watching how flour is made from grain.  The tours are given Monday – Friday only.  Please call or check their website for more information.

Bob’s Red MillCaveats:  Tours are not given on Saturdays and Sundays, which is when a lot of families are available.

Distance from Portland:  Within 10 miles of downtown Portland.  Located at 13521 SE Pheasant Ct, Milwaukie, OR.  Here is a Google Map.

Recommended Ages:  Factory tours are best for kids ages 5 and up.  I think even older kids would find it interesting. Eating at the retail shop is good for all members of the family.

Parental Stress Factor:  Very low…there is plenty of room to eat and the food comes out quickly.  Plus, they bring you the food and clean-up!

Physical Difficulty:  N/A  Sitting upstairs may not an option for physical handicaps; however, there is plenty of accessible seating downstairs.

Family Fun Factor:  Not an entertaining restaurant – however, it’s a good fit for busy families and the food is good.  The tour will not have your kids jumping for joy, but it is probably a good bet on a rainy, winter day.

Pet Friendly:  No pets

Weather Considerations:  Taking a tour is a great activity during a rainy day.

Bob’s Red MillInsider Info:  If you’re trying to avoid wheat/wheat gluten, this is the place for you!  They have a nice collection of cookbooks and books about cooking with various grains.

If you don’t want to take the tour, the main floor of the retail shop has a video constantly  playing, which demonstrates how they process grains.  It’s worth checking out.  They also have a a recipe finder on their website.

Bob’s Red MillFamily Tips:  After you get your food, head upstairs for plenty of seating and a nice view of the store.  The sandwiches are BIG, even from the kid section of the menu.  Most likely, you’ll only need to order half a sandwich, or split it between siblings.
