Hopworks Urban BreweryWhat’s to Love:  You may think you know where to find the best burger in Portland.  Well…you’re wrong!  Unless of course, you were thinking “Hopworks Urban Brewery.”  I generally don’t single out restaurants for their food ONLY, but I couldn’t resist mentioning the burger.  Usually, when I check-out a restaurant, I’m looking for good value with an atmosphere that is “family friendly” (i.e., they won’t kick you out if your kids has a meltdown, or you won’t get dirty looks while breastfeeding your kid).  However, Hopworks’ 1/2 pound of 20% all-natural beef will truly knock your socks off.  In my opinion, it’s the best hamburger in Portland, especially in a family-friendly venue.  The quality of the meat is exceptional, it’s always perfectly cooked, and it comes on a bun that is almost like a pastry.  I recommend the BBQ, bacon, and cheddar burger, if that’s your thing.  Of course, they have many options on the menu that will satisfy everyone in the family.  In addition, Hopworks has chosen a sustainable business model both for construction and operation.

Outdoor seating and waiting areaBilled as “Portland’s first eco-brewpub,” the restaurant backs it up by incorporating sustainability in all aspects of their operation.  They are powered by 100% renewable energy!  As stated on their website’s homepage:

From composting to rain barrels, and from pervious pavers to hand dryers, we have made every effort to protect “our“ future with a thoughtful alternative.  Hopworks has four distinct areas including a family friendly restaurant with play area, a vibrant bicycle bar, banquet mezzanine, and outdoor beer-garden.  Our 20 barrel brewery produces 3000 barrels a year and provides our restaurant with ten different HUB organic beers on tap and two cask ales at all times. We have parking for seventy cars, eight motorcycles and up to fifty bikes.  Our world-class beer, New York style pizza, and wonderful staff are some of the best you will find anywhere.

Clearly, there was a lot of thought when designing this brewpub, and it clearly fits into Portland’s image as a “green city.”  The kids’ menu is typical of what you’d find at most restaurants.  Again, as a parent, I’d like to see scaled-down versions of some of their “adult dishes.”  They do offer “Earth’s Best” organic babyfood, which is something you don’t find at every restaurant.  Plus, they will bring out some pizza dough for your kids to play with while waiting for your order.

After eating here on several occasions with my family, I have no doubt that this is quickly becoming a family favorite for many Portland parents.  You will feel comfortable with your kids wandering around aimlessly checking things out.  The staff members are friendly, and it’s likely that you’ll meet other parents while hanging out with your own family.  While in a busy location off Powell, it’s exactly what the inner-southeast needed for food!

Kids' area at Hopworks BreweryCaveats:  On nice summer evenings, you may have to wait a long time to get in, which is obviously a bi-product of excellent food and service.  On one occasion, we had to leave after waiting more than 20 minutes.

There are only 4 items on the kids’ menu, which doesn’t exactly vibe with the “family-friendly” part.  Expect to pay a bit more here for family lunch and/or dinner, which besides burgers includes salads, soups, lasagna, pizza and calzones.

Distance from Portland:  Located at 2944 SE Powell, and is within 3 miles of downtown Portland.  Here is a Google map.

Recommended Ages:  Hopworks is one of those restaurants that works for the whole family.  Small kids all the way through high school seniors will feel comfortable here.

Parental Stress Factor:  Overall, this is a pretty low-stress hangout for your family.  When Hopworks is busy, the kid-area can get a bit chaotic for some parents.

Physical Difficulty:  Restaurant is handicap-accessible.  If there is a mobility issue, folks should be dropped-off in the front of the restaurant.

Family Fun Factor:  Low  to Medium.  The goal of this restaurant isn’t “family entertainment,” so I cannot give it a rating of “high.”  However, your family will have a relaxing meal in a very nice environment.

Pet Friendly:  N/A

Weather Considerations:  Open year round…

Hopworks Brewery, Portland, OregonInsider Info: Most likely, the front parking lot will be full on a busy night.  It’s no problem – just head around to the back of the place, because there is ample parking in the rear.  From the rear parking area, there is a staircase to the back entrance of the restaurant.

Booth seating at Hopworks Urban BreweryThey have dedicated a corner of the main restaurant to be a “family friendly” area, which features a small play area for your kids to hang out.  There is a train table, chalkboard and some assorted toys.

Walk-ins only…meaning, no reservations unless you have a party with 10 or more.  If you’re a beer drinker, it would be a criminal offense to walk out of this place without sampling their organic brews!  Learn more about Hopworks’ commitment to being sustainable, organic and green.

Bar at Hopworks Urban BreweryFamily Tips:  If it’s busy, you may have better luck with your kids hanging outside in the front or out on the back porch.  The play area is quite small, and when it gets crowded it’s almost more stressful to keep the peace.  Don’t forget the pizza dough for the little ones!  It will keep them busy while waiting for your food.
