Spielwerk Toys – Werkshops
     Email Post   Print Page

Felted soapbar werkshopWhat’s to Love:  Spielwerk has long been my favorite toy store in Portland.  The owners (Sonja Barclay & Stacee Wion) filled a stellar Sellwood location with Waldorf-inspired toys, games, tools, and art supplies.  Forget about the plastic junk you’ll find at places like Toys R Us – this is a Portland original featuring toys that you’ll hang onto for years and years.

Plus, you’ll feel good about supporting a local business like Spielwerk.  It’s obvious Sonja and Stacee realize the importance of building strong relationships with their customers and the community, which is why they host some inspired “werkshops” for kids and their parents.

Spielwerk WerkshopThese classes are creatively designed to involve your children in hands-on arts and crafts.  Click here to see the incredible range of activities including making bread, beeswax flower fairies, felt Easter eggs, sidewalk chalk, and learning about planting a garden.  Their website allows online registration and payments, which is a nice touch.

Getting soapyThe current listing of classes is just a small sample of the wonderful classes they’ve put together over the years.  I have personally attended several of these, and I’m always impressed with how well the folks at Spielwerk interact with the children.  In the pictures and video, my son Rhys is making a felted soapbar for Mother’s Day.  We all had a great time!

CaveatsFrom their website “Registration closes 24 hours prior to the posted start-time. After that time, wait-listed children are notified and spaces are filled. Last minute registration can only be accommodated in person or by phone.”  The Werkshops are in a pretty small space, so class size is limited.

Distance from Portland:  Spielwerk Toys has two locations in Portland!  The “Boise” store is at 3808 N. Williams #121.  The “Sellwood” store is at 7956 SE 13th Avenue.

Recommended Ages:  This will depend on the activity.  The age levels are always posted on their registration/class description page.  Check their website to make sure the activity is age appropriate for your kids.

Parental Stress Factor:  The activity leader creates a very calm and nurturing atmosphere.  Sometimes, this energy can be disrupted by anxious children, but for the most part, this is a very low stress activity for parents.

Physical Difficulty:  N/A

Family Fun Factor:  Medium to High!  Who doesn’t like to do a cool art project?  I think this is definitely fun for age appropriate kids (see thier website for details) and their parents.

Pet Friendly:  N/A

Weather Considerations:  Great rainy day activity, but always fine in any weather!

Cool dudes with their soap!Insider Info:  In addition to their Werkshops, Spielwerk also host a variety of fun events at their stores.  Click here for their special event calendar.

  2. toys which is created by using wood are completely safe for our baby, cause it is not harmful and it's weight is too low so that baby can play with that very comfortably. we should make sure not to getting hurt our babies when they are playing with wooden toys.
